Rob's Carburetor Rebuilds

'87-'88 FZR1000 with Mikuni BDS37 Down-drafts

This was the first generation of the FZR1000. It may not have rivaled the later FZR1000, but it was a major player on the streets for it's time. One of my favorite bikes, I have owned a few and worked on many. They have some pitfalls that can be easily missed. If I work on yours, I treat them as if they are going on MY bike. Be sure to check out the ID (If you can read it) as people retrofit FZ750, FZ700, and sometimes FZX700 carbs on them which never work well, especially if they ever got rebuilt as if they were FZR1000 carbs.

Note: Starting in '74 Yamaha started year coding bikes in the last letter used in the name. You may see this code on your bikes paperwork or in a parts list or catalog.  I leave this off as it is redundant if you are showing the year anyway. There is a chart below to find your year code.

Below is a set of '87-'88 FZR1000 2LJ (Cal) Mikuni BDS37 carbs. These were the same tuning '87-'88 other than the California version. It is very important the float height and float seat assembly are set-up right or you can easily damage an engine with hydraulic lock-up.
