Rob's Carburetor Rebuilds

'99-'09 XVS1100 V-Star V-Twin with Mikuni BSR37

This was the very popular XVS1100 series. They all came with Mikuni BSR37 carbs, but in two flavors. Both types came equipped with a heater system, but the second version (5YS) came with fuel cut-off solenoids on each of the bowls. The two types do not have the same tuning. The list below makes it appear to be confusing and seem there are more variations than the two, but most number changes were cosmetic. This includes the custom painted versions and the Silverado's too, which were just fancy versions of either the normal Custom or Classic.

Note: Starting in '74 Yamaha started year coding bikes in the last letter used in the name. You may see this code on your bikes paperwork or in a parts list or catalog.  I leave this off as it is redundant if you are showing the year anyway. There is a chart below to find your year code.

Below are both general types of the BSR37 carbs used on the XVS1100. The 5EL used on early and the 5YS used on later versions. The later 5YS version has fuel cut-off solenoids mounted to the sides of the float bowls. The two sets have different internal tuning and this is the best way to determine your set. They both physically mount to any year so they can be incorrectly mounted. By default the solenoids are NOT in the cut-off position so if unplugged they really are not a huge issue if used on the earlier models, although I do not recommend this interchange. This only covers US models.

'99-'03 XVS1100 V-Star Classic--------------------------5EL

'04-'09 XVS1100 V-Star Classic--------------------------5YS

There are many different actual ID changes for these models. And special models like Silverado's may not be the same year change. However, there really only are the two different types when it comes to servicing them. Some have heaters, some don't, etc. The main way to ID them is the 5EL does not have the fuel cut-off solenoids on the float bowls and the 5YS does. They ARE tuned differently so it is important to ID this way.
