XV700-XV1000-XV1100 Virago V-Twins with Hitachi HSC40 Carbs
This is the second variation of the Hitachi Virago carbs found on the XV700, XV1000, and the first two years of the XV1100*. They are second gen Hitachi HSC40s. These carbs were still Hitachi like earlier 750 and 920 models, but very different in design. These require very carful rebuilds as they have a pressed-in idle jet. Also, sometimes they have had earlier parts introduced that will not properly work. They also have a very specific slide made just for this version and many other pitfalls.
Note: Starting in '74 Yamaha started year coding bikes in the last letter used in the name. You may see this code on your bikes paperwork or in a parts list or catalog. I leave this off as it is redundant if you are showing the year anyway. There is a chart below to find your year code.
Below is a pair of '84-'87 XV700 Virago 42W Hitachi HSC40 carbs and some pictures of the XV1100 '86-'87 so you can see the added air cut-off valve housings added to the sides for this model only. The XV700 were the same from '84-'87 other than the California version that has different internal tuning. These were a special version of the Hitachi HSC40 only used on the '86-'87 XV1100 Virago, '84-'85 XV1000 and the XV700 models below. This only pertains to US models, especially the 700cc as it was only US.
