'87-'08 VS1400 Intruder With Mikuni BS36SS Side-Draft and BDS36SS Down-Draft Combo Carbs
This is the largest of the dual carb Suzuki cruiser bikes. The first generation Intruders have a odd twin carb set with a side-draft rear carb and a down-draft front carb. They are totally different versions and can be very problematic if not tuned right or the parts get mixed up. Both information and proper rebuild kits are not readily available. Most of these I rebuild have a lot more issues than just being gummed-up. I never buy kits for these, I make them up myself so they function as they should. These bikes run great when everything is right. These bikes do not have the same tuning on all models and years even though the carbs will physically fit any year.
Starting in '71 Suzuki started year coding bikes in the last letter used in the name. You may see this code on your bikes paperwork or in a parts list or catalog. I leave this off as it is redundant if you are showing the year anyway. There is a chart below to find your year code.
Below is a set of '04 VS1400 38BE1 carbs before rebuild and then some pre assembly pics.. These carbs take a lot of care to do them correctly. I have rebuilt a few of these and most had many pitfalls involved with the job. They have a lot of things other carbs do not have and many things to overlook if your not on your toes. These bikes run awesome when set-up correctly.
