Mikuni 29mm VM Smoothbore Carbs
In the Japanese four cylinder carb world this was one of the most popular racing carbs ever sold. These are the 29mm Mikuni smoothbores. They are a VM style mechanical slide carb that was most popular on the 900-1000 Kawasaki fours, but also fitted to early GS Suzuki's and many others. Some bikes used adapters, but they bolt right up to Z1-900, KZ1000 up to '80 and GS750-GS1000's. Since they are a VM style Mikuni carb they are often mistaken with factory VM carbs, but they are VERY different. Very little directly interchanges. Identifying these carbs can be tricky as some early versions have no markings and they were sold by racing suppliers who would add proprietary parts for custom builds and mark them with their own ID's. If you buy a set of these from another bike than yours, you want to assume they have been changed. I can tune these for any bike they fit on as long as they were not a bad choice to begin with. As with most companies they offered adapters and fit to models they just are not at all designed for. For instance they made adapters for GS1100E which is absurd in my opinion. If you have a bike that came with Mikuni BS34's Mikuni Radial flatslides would be much better suited. Below I made a list of models that they work well on. Models with (**) will need adapter which are super rare so keep this in mind.
Below is a set of Mikuni 29mm VM Smoothbore A7 carbs. This is the most popular number I rebuild and they were made for the 900-1000 Kawasaki's and can also be fitted to KZ650 with the use of KZ900-1000 manifolds and a healthy HP engine. I added the before pictures of the same carb. I use only the best parts for these and know them stem to stern. I only cover US models here.
